This series consists of journals and acts of the Board of Education and Board of Regents of the University or State of Alabama, 1869-1874; reports of the Superintendent of Education and Executive Officer of the State Board of Education for the annual meeting of the Board, 1927-1934; and minutes of the conference of county boards of education, 1916 in SG013206. The journals and acts show the Board of Education's function as a legislative body in relation to public education and the importance of the Board of Regents in the early history of the University of Alabama. Various reports are also included, as in the report of the Librarian at the University and one on troubles in the Mobile free schools. The reports of the Superintendent cover general activities since the last annual meeting and focus on issues of immediate concern. Included are summaries of activities concerning the sale of timber, Negro education, the codification of school laws, and other topics as well as reports from divisions and exhibits of departmental expenditures. The minutes of the county boards' conference include an agenda, reports on various issues (for example, county board membership, laws, and duties; illiteracy; the school library; observance of special days; and plans for the future), and a photoprint of conference participants.
